Our Background

How We Got Here

Sirlenda, the visionary behind SO GROUNDED™, always had a strong desire to homeschool her children. However, due to the demands of her 15-year career at the NYC Department of Education, she was unable to pursue this goal. In the wake of the pandemic, Sirlenda has shifted her focus towards cherishing and honoring her African heritage. She aims to rebuild and heal her community for generations to come through a curriculum rooted in African Culture.

MRS. W Workshop

Our focus:
Mathematics, Reading, Science & Writing

Workshop Series: Ongoing

In this 90-minute workshop, secondary school students will explore African and African American culture with an emphasis on interrelated knowledge for a holistic understanding of our identity and the world around us.

As a bonus, this workshop includes access to digital resources and videos featuring instruction and interactive learning activities.

This workshop also includes distribution of educational materials designed to supplement and enhance the learning experience.

Sew Grounded

Workshop Series: Ongoing

This 3-hour workshop is designed for both beginners and experienced sewers. Secondary school students will learn essential sewing skills, including fabric cutting, pattern following, and African-inspired designs and techniques. The workshop will also explore cultural identity and history, from Ankara prints to Adinkra symbols.

Sewing machines, African Fabric, thread and other essentials for this workshop is provided.

Herbal Kidz
Collaboration w/ BrownStoned Gypsy

Workshop Series: Ongoing

During this 2-hour workshop, secondary school students will be reintroduced to the world of herbs and plants and their significance in our lives. You will learn about environmental awareness, how to grow and maintain these plants, and cook with fresh flavors. You will also learn how to curate and create a variety of tea blends, tinctures, and useful homemade medicines.

As a bonus, this workshop includes access to digital resources and videos featuring instruction and interactive learning activities.

This workshop also includes distribution of educational materials designed to supplement and enhance the learning experience.

Financial Kidz™
Collaboration w/ CommonStake Group

Workshop Series: Online Only

Join us for an engaging one-hour workshop where secondary school students will learn about budgeting, saving, investing, and responsible money habits. This knowledge will help you understand how empowering ourselves and our community can lead to economic gains and solutions for economic and community empowerment.

As a bonus, this workshop includes access to digital resources, online instruction, and interactive learning activities.

This series also includes distributing educational materials to supplement and enhance the learning experience.
